The Mahjong Effect
Here's the thing about Mahjong — once it gets you, it really gets you. It's strategic, social, and just complicated enough to keep you hooked. Our lessons exist for exactly that reason: to give beginners a real foundation, give experienced players room to grow, and give everyone a community worth showing up for.
Meet Susan
What started as a personal love for Mahjong quickly grew into a passion for teaching it. I created Mahj by Susan to make learning American Mahjong feel approachable, social, and fun, especially for beginners who may feel intimidated by the game at first.
My classes focus on building confidence through guided play, strategy, and connection around the table. Whether you’re learning for the first time or continuing to grow your skills, the goal is always the same: creating a welcoming space where people can learn, play, and connect.
Private Lessons
Bring Mahjong to your next girls’ night, birthday, or private gathering. In-home sessions are tailored to your group and pace, creating a fun, welcoming experience for beginners and experienced players alike.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience to join a class?
Not at all. Mahjong can feel intimidating at first, but my classes are designed specifically for beginners. I’ll guide you step-by-step through the tiles, the NMJL card, gameplay, and table etiquette in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
What should I bring to my first lesson?
Just yourself. I provide the Mahjong sets, NMJL cards, and printed guides we’ll use during class.
How many people are in a typical studio class?
Most studio classes have 4–8 players. That’s small enough for personal attention, but big enough to feel like a real Mahjong table.
Do you offer private in-home lessons?
Yes. I can come to your home in the local area for one-on-one lessons or small groups. It’s perfect for friends, families, or game nights.
Can I book you for a private event or party?
Yes. Private lessons and Mahjong parties are available for small groups, girls’ nights, birthdays, country clubs, corporate events, and more. I can host lessons in your home or at select local venues.
Is Mahjong difficult to learn?
Mahjong has a learning curve, but it becomes much easier when it’s taught clearly and played in a supportive environment. My classes break the game down into manageable, easy-to-understand steps.
